Life is busy, and sometimes a blogger just can’t keep up…

It would be an understatement to say my life has taken a few twists and turns  in the past year, and with that, I’ve (obviously) been neglecting this blog.  I’ve  decided to “officially” sign off on here for now, and will just leave everything as is.  I think I’ve covered most issues a new MT might want to read about, anyway.   If you would like to start a discussion or ask a question about a topic related to medical transcription, drop me a note on the “Contact Me” page, and I’ll be happy to pick up the blog again, at least for a post or two ;-)   I always love to hear from my fellow transcriptionists.

I do plan on maintaining the main QFMT site as well; if you see anything there that needs my attention, i.e., broken links, outdated info, new links I should add, etc., please let me know.

Happy Transcribing!

Should you buy reference books?

Reference books are a significant investment, and likely you have at least a few, or are thinking of getting a few.  It’s entirely possible to find everything you need online, but a specialty reference narrows the focus for you, and can be a lot quicker than searching the world wide web.   Read the rest of this entry »

Happy MT week!

And yes, I know, I’m late.  I had a post all ready, and meant to publish it at the beginning of the week, but I guess meaning to and actually doing it are two very diffferent things.  Sorry ’bout that.  Here it is now, better late than never, I hope.  It is still MT week, at least  :-)

I just wanted to throw out a great big pat on the back to all of you hard working MTs, for your dedication to this often thankless profession we have chosen.  You and I know how important our role is in our healthcare system, but it’s nice to have a week of public recognition from those on the outside, as well.

I hope your employers have remembered you this week in some way.   To  those of you who are self employed, I hope you reward yourself with some fabulous chocolate or a new book you’ve been wanting to read…whatever makes you happy!   You deserve it!

Behind the dictation… “cold calorics”

MTs type dozens of tests, procedures, and exam techniques day in and day out.  Because we don’t need to know exactly how or why a procedure is done, we often don’t know the how or why of the test we’re typing.  From a transcription standpoint, it is enough to know the correct procedure for the specialty and context, and how to spell it.

Sometimes, though, I want to know more.  I  came across a  procedure today that I hadn’t heard  in a while, and the description of  it piqued my curiosity.  It was a test dictated as “cold caloric reflex.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Keyboards!

Typematrix keyboard and skinSo….what kind of keyboard do YOU use?  I use a TypeMatrix, and I wanted to talk about it here because, well, I think you should be using one too.

What?  You say your keyboard is just fine?  You already have an “ergonomic” keyboard?  I used to think my old keyboard was just fine, too.  Until I developed carpal tunnel syndrome less than 2 years after launching my MT career.  Read the rest of this entry »
